Alicante's Torrevieja Desalination Plant Set for €89.5 Million Expansion

July 2024

Acuamed of Spain has recently granted a €89.5 million contract to a joint venture involving Sacyr Water (40%), Sacyr Construction (10%), Cadagua, Ferrovial’s water unit (40%), and Ferrovial Construction (10%) for the expansion, operation, and maintenance of the Torrevieja desalination plant in Alicante. This comprehensive agreement spans four years and aims to increase the plant’s desalinated water output by 50%, from its current 80 hm³ annually to 120 hm³.

Central to the project is the construction of a new 5,000 sqm warehouse to house advanced reverse osmosis desalination systems and associated equipment. This facility will also accommodate new osmosis equipment, energy recovery systems, and PX isobaric chambers. Additionally, the expansion includes the enhancement of seawater intake with two new catchment systems and the upgrading of seawater pumping capacity.

Further improvements involve modifications to the CO2 dosing system to optimize pressurization of permeate water, as well as the expansion of the treated water pumping station at the EBI and EBII steps. Each station will incorporate three new pumps and an anti-ram tank to support increased water throughput.

Upon completion, the upgraded facility is expected to bolster water supply for the Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla population and provide essential irrigation support for agricultural fields in Campo de Cartagena. This initiative represents a significant infrastructure enhancement aimed at meeting the region's growing water demands efficiently and sustainably.
