Abu Dhabi, Marubeni, and Suez to Develop $1 Billion Wastewater Facility in Uzbekistan

August 2024

A consortium consisting of Abu Dhabi Sustainable Water Solutions Company (ADSWS), Japan's Marubeni, and France's Suez has entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade, along with Uzsuvtaminot, to establish the largest wastewater treatment facility in Central Asia. This state-of-the-art plant, to be located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, is poised to be a significant milestone in the region's infrastructure development.

The Surum Wastewater Treatment Project, valued at $1 billion, will boast a capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters of wastewater treatment per day, according to a press statement from ADSWS. The project also includes the installation of new trunk sewer lines, with construction scheduled to commence in 2026. The facility is anticipated to be fully operational by 2030, at which point Uzsuvtaminot will assume control of the newly installed trunk sewer lines.

With a 25-year concession period, the new facility will replace the existing wastewater treatment plants in Salar and Bektimir. Upon completion, it is expected to serve approximately three million residents in Tashkent and neighboring cities.

This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) and Uzsuvtaminot in November 2022 to collaborate on a wastewater treatment plant in Tashkent. ADSWS took over ADSSC in May 2023, furthering its commitment to advancing sustainable water solutions in the region.
