Abstract The results of the tertiary filtration tests, carried out in full scale, on SERECO gravity disk filter type FDGIE at the municipal sewage treatment plant of Putignano (BA) Italy are here reported. The filter, with a filtering surface in stainless steel grade AISI316L, has been installed downstream secondary sedimentation tank and upstream disinfection
A 10 months long test campaign (March to December 2020) was carried out in the most varied real operating conditions. Results obtained show: specific mass flow values, treated by the filter, clearly higher than those tabulated in the technical literature for similar filters; excellent results in terms of effectiveness of containment of outlet TSS with excellent response even in cases of peaks of TSS at both impulsive and step type; head losses in line with expectations and slightly lower than the values tabulated in the specific technical literature; flow rate loss due to backwashing in line with expectations, and on average lower than the values tabulated in the technical literature; specific energy consumption in line with the expected values. SERECO, founded in 1975 in Noci (BA), Italy, specializes in the design and construction of plants, equipment and process machines for water and wastewater treatment plants, both municipal and industrial, water intake from sea, rivers and lakes. The company today offers the most complete range of equipment for water treatment sector. Each machine is manufactured on original design developed by an in-house team of engineers and produced in a proprietary workshop, with a strong vertical integration of the production process. Please refer to the company website www.sereco. it for a complete overview of the company and products. The equipment A gravity disk filter is installed as tertiary treatment of filtration for civil and industrial wastewater treatment plants where it is necessary to obtain an effluent to be reused, therefore particularly clear and with a reduced presence of organic substances and suspended solids. The gravity disk filter type FDGIE is characterized by the direction of filtration inside to outside, by the material of the filter in special stainless steel mesh, by simplicity of operation and by a reduced overall dimension with the same flow rate compared to more conventional filtration methods and also when compared to similar methods available on the market. The FDGIE filter is available in 2 versions: one designed for installation in a concrete tank to be built on site and one compact supplied in prefabricated tank by SERECO which, in the standard version, is made of stainless steel. The range includes standard models with nominal flow rates from a minimum of 67 m3 h-1 to a maximum of 4760 m3 h-1 (with a nominal filtration opening of 10 microns) and non-standard models adapted to customs’ requests. The filter works by gravity, with a minimum pressure drop between upstream and downstream as better described in the paragraph dedicated to the test results. During normal operation the discs rotate slowly and the backwash pump is off. The progressive clogging of the filtering surface causes a progressive increase in the level difference between upstream and downstream.
