In a historic collaboration following a rigorous bidding process, SUEZ and Maynilad, the Philippines' largest private water concessionaire, are teaming up to lead a transformative wastewater treatment initiative. This joint effort, endorsed by the Philippine Government, aims to significantly reduce water pollution in Manila Bay, crucial for safeguarding the environment and enhancing residents' quality of life.
Manila Bay holds pivotal significance in the country's economic landscape. Yet, years of untreated sewage discharge have plagued it, making it one of the nation's most polluted water bodies. SUEZ is poised to establish the Central Manila Sewerage System (CMSS) Water Reclamation Facility, marking a bold commitment to environmental rejuvenation.
Situated in Manila's port area, the 180 million litres per day treatment facility will ensure that treated wastewater meets the stringent regulations set by the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), aligning with European Union standards. This rehabilitation effort will also positively impact Laguna Lake, interconnected with Manila Bay via the Pasig River, serving as a vital drinking water source for millions in the region.
The project will harness SUEZ's cutting-edge and proven technologies, notably Cyclor Turbo, to streamline the treatment process. These compact and resilient technologies will optimize facility integrity and quality within a confined space, minimizing land usage and energy consumption, thereby reducing the overall environmental footprint.
Moreover, SUEZ will undertake the revitalization of the aging Tondo Sewage Pumping Plant, alongside constructing a conveyance system integral to the CMSS, facilitating the transportation of raw wastewater from customers to the treatment facility. Commencing in January 2024 and slated for completion in 2027, the CMSS project aims to enhance the lives of approximately 1 million individuals across a vast 2,820-hectare area.
Ramoncito Fernandez, President and CEO of Maynilad, remarked, "The Central Manila Sewerage System is one of the major projects that Maynilad is pursuing to uphold its commitment to rehabilitating and safeguarding Manila Bay. Through this monumental endeavor, we endeavor to improve quality of life by ensuring cleaner waterways and healthier communities."
Sabrina Soussan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SUEZ, stated, "This contract marks a significant milestone for SUEZ. The forthcoming Central Manila Sewerage System project underscores our proficiency in preserving water resources through innovative and resilient technologies. I extend my gratitude to Maynilad for entrusting us with this mission, enabling us to lead the ecological transformation."
