Alucor, a leading EPC contractor in the Middle East, has recently announced a strategic partnership with Doosan, a prominent South Korean multinational conglomerate. This collaboration is set to play a pivotal role in the Shuaibah 3 IWP, an innovative seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination project located in Saudi Arabia.
Under the terms of the agreement, Alucor will oversee the mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation installation for the Shuaibah 3 IWP, boasting an impressive daily capacity of 600,000 cubic meters. Spearheaded by a special purpose vehicle, the Shuaibah Three Water Desalination Company, the venture is initiated by Saudi utility developer Acwa Power and Water & Electricity Holding Company (Badeel), a wholly-owned unit of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, PIF.
The collaboration between the Shuaibah Three Water Desalination Company and the project off-taker, Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC), was formalized in 2022 to transform the Shuaibah 3 IWPP. This ambitious initiative involves the conversion of the existing IWPP, transitioning from an energy-intensive power generation and thermal desalination facility to a state-of-the-art SWRO desalination plant powered by solar energy.
This conversion is not only a technological leap but also holds immense environmental significance. The project is estimated to result in an annual reduction of nearly 45 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, along with the preservation of 22 million barrels of light crude oil.
Upon completion, the Shuaibah 3 IWP, situated 110 km south of Jeddah in the Shuaibah region, is poised to emerge as one of the largest desalination facilities in the kingdom. This groundbreaking venture marks a crucial step towards sustainable and eco-friendly water desalination practices in the region.
