Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans to establish the Saudi Water Authority (SWA), a move that will transform the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) and adopt new organizational frameworks. This announcement, made during a recent Cabinet session, is a pivotal step toward enhancing water management and promoting innovation in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
The SWA will oversee the regulation and development of water-related businesses and services, focusing on sustainability and supporting the National Water Strategy. Its mandate includes strategic planning for the Kingdom's water supply, driving initiatives to improve performance, and increasing local content in the industry.
H.E. Eng. Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al Abdulkarim, President of SWA, described the Cabinet's approval as a milestone for the Saudi water sector. He highlighted that this transformation signifies a significant shift for the SWCC, which has been in operation for over 50 years. Al Abdulkarim outlined SWA's strategic objectives, such as enhancing regulatory frameworks, improving efficiency in the water supply chain, and fostering innovation to create job opportunities and elevate professional standards.
H.E. Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al Fadley, Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and Chairman of SWA, underscored the decision's importance for advancing the water sector. He stressed the need to leverage SWCC's expertise in research, innovation, and localization to strengthen water security, aligning with the nation's development goals and economic ambitions.
Ultimately, SWA aims to elevate the water sector's contribution to Saudi economic development, boost private sector participation, and align with global standards to solidify its leadership in water solutions. Al Abdulkarim reaffirmed SWA's commitment to advancing the Kingdom's water sector and ensuring responsible resource management as part of Saudi Vision 2030.
