The Sonatrach Group has received a fresh shipment of equipment at Houari Boumediene International Airport to accelerate the construction of five seawater desalination plants, according to an official statement.
This initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s national program to enhance Algeria’s water security through large-scale desalination projects. The program includes the construction of five major plants with a combined capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters per day. Under the guidance of Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi, the company has initiated a dedicated airlift to transport critical equipment and materials for the projects.
Leveraging the world’s largest cargo planes, this logistical effort ensures smooth project execution. The latest shipment, weighing 72 tons, arrived aboard a cargo plane early this morning.
The delivery included heat exchangers for medium-pressure stations, specifically designated for the Tighremt seawater desalination project in Béjaïa. Representatives from Sonatrach subsidiaries—the Algerian Energy Company (AEC) and the National Pipeline Company (ENAC)—were present to oversee the shipment’s arrival.
This development marks a significant step in advancing Algeria’s water infrastructure and addressing the nation’s strategic water security goals.
