The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources has disclosed that significant progress has been made within the initial phase of the Decent Life initiative, launched in 2019 with the objective of rural development. As per the ministry's announcement on Tuesday, a substantial 3,230 kilometers of canals have undergone rehabilitation. However, it is noted that the target for this phase stood at 4,000 kilometers, leaving approximately 770 kilometers still under rehabilitation.
Moreover, in February 2023, the ministry revealed through a press statement that the cumulative length of canals lined had reached 6,648 kilometers, with plans underway to invite tenders for the lining of an additional 1,664 kilometers. This underscores the concerted efforts towards enhancing irrigation infrastructure.
In alignment with broader developmental goals, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, in a report issued in November 2022, highlighted the government's ambitious aim to complete the lining of 20,000 kilometers of canals by mid-2024. Such initiatives are pivotal for sustainable development and socio-economic progress.
It is pertinent to mention that the canal lining endeavors span across 18 governorates, with particular focus on regions such as Menya, Luxor, Menoufeya, Asyut, Qena, Beni Suef, Sohag, and Beheira. This strategic distribution ensures equitable access to improved water management infrastructure, fostering agricultural productivity and rural prosperity.
