Major Water Infrastructure in Jordan Set for Implementation This Year

February 2025

Jordan’s National Water Carrier Project is advancing steadily under Royal directives, with the government emphasizing its significance as both a water security and national security priority. Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Soud reaffirmed this commitment, stating that financial, technical, and legal preparations for the project are progressing, with implementation expected to begin before the end of the year in collaboration with the private sector and international institutions. The project has garnered support from key global partners, including the French Development Agency (AFD), which has played a crucial role in Jordan’s water sector through funding and technical expertise.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the Jordanian-French Business Club Association and the Franco-Jordanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CAFRAJ) in Amman, Abu Soud outlined Jordan’s severe water challenges, including a decline in per capita water availability to less than 60 cubic meters for all uses. The event, attended by French Ambassador Alexis Le Cour Grandmaison and Australian Ambassador Bernard Lynch, served as a platform for Jordanian, French, and regional companies to explore investment opportunities in water infrastructure.

Abu Soud highlighted Jordan’s ongoing efforts to improve water management, reduce water loss, and combat illegal usage. He noted the importance of sustainable water resources, particularly through flagship initiatives such as the Disi Water Conveyance Project and the Khirbet Al Samra wastewater treatment plant—both of which have benefited from French cooperation. France remains a key donor in Jordan’s water sector, supporting projects that enhance water management in Amman and reduce water loss through targeted programs.

Jordan’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation is actively working to ensure a stable water supply for citizens and industries by implementing advanced technologies and strategic partnerships. The National Water Carrier Project, a large-scale desalination initiative, is central to these efforts, and its upcoming implementation marks a major milestone in securing Jordan’s long-term water sustainability.
