Nama Power and Water Procurement Company officially inaugurated Phase 5 of the Barka Water Desalination Plant in the Wilayat of Barka, South Al Batinah Governorate. The project, which began commercial operation on 22 June 2024, cost approximately RO 52 million and is part of government efforts to enhance water security in response to rising demand for fresh water.
The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Abdul Salam bin Mohammed Al Murshidi, Chairman of Oman Investment Authority (OIA), with the attendance of officials from both the public and private sectors. Speaking at the event, Al Murshidi highlighted the significance of the project as a contributor to vital infrastructure initiatives aligned with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. He added that it represents a practical embodiment of OIA's decentralization approach in developing governorates across the Sultanate of Oman.
Dr. Mansoor Talib Al Hinai, Chairman of the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), provided further details on the project, which spans an area of 38,000 square metres and has a production capacity of 100,000 cubic metres per day. He emphasized the plant’s role as a cornerstone in Nama company’s strategy to procure energy and water while supporting the water sector with cutting-edge technologies, including the use of reverse osmosis technology for seawater desalination.
Additionally, Dr. Mansoor pointed out that approximately 50% of the project’s value was directed toward small and medium enterprises (SMEs), underscoring Nama's commitment to enhancing local added value. The project is seen as a significant step forward in advancing national strategies for sustainable development and water resource sustainability.
