In an ambitious move to bolster Dubai's water infrastructure, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) undertook an extensive project throughout 2022 to extend the main water transmission pipelines in multiple areas across the city. With a substantial investment amounting to approximately AED 358 million, DEWA successfully implemented these pipeline extensions, covering a vast expanse of 64 kilometers. The pipelines, boasting diameters of 600, 900, and 1200 mm, were strategically installed in various locations to cater to the growing water demands of Dubai's residents.
To ensure efficient and uninterrupted control of key water networks, the transmission pipeline extensions were equipped with state-of-the-art remote monitoring systems. This cutting-edge technology empowered DEWA to effectively manage the water supply round the clock. Automated valves, operated from a centralized control center, played a pivotal role in minimizing disruptions and curbing water network losses. By leveraging these advancements, DEWA aimed to optimize the performance of the water infrastructure and elevate its reliability.
Furthermore, the pipeline extensions encompassed the comprehensive supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of Glass-Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) water pipes in varying diameters. This deployment of GRE pipes not only bolstered the durability of the water network but also enhanced its efficiency and longevity. DEWA's visionary leader, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO, emphasized the organization's unwavering commitment to the ongoing development of Dubai's water network. This steadfast dedication aimed to augment the network's operational efficiency and bolster its reliability while ensuring an increased water flow.
DEWA's aspirations extended beyond immediate requirements, focusing on catering to both current and future customer needs. With an ambitious target of serving more than 1.15 million customers in Dubai, DEWA strived to deliver its services in adherence to the highest standards of availability, reliability, and efficiency. This objective was aligned with the growing demand and the need to sustain ample water reserves in the city. Testament to its commitment, DEWA had successfully achieved a total production capacity of 490 million imperial gallons per day for desalinated water.
Commenting on DEWA's groundbreaking efforts, Al Tayer highlighted the organization's investment in advanced smart networks and the latest technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This transformative approach aimed to solidify DEWA's leadership and global excellence in minimizing water losses. Notably, DEWA had surpassed prominent utilities worldwide, showcasing one of the lowest percentages of water network losses globally. In 2022, water network losses recorded a mere 4.5%, a remarkable feat when compared to the approximate 15% losses observed in North America. These accomplishments firmly established DEWA as one of the most distinguished and reputable utilities worldwide, standing tall across all domains.
