ACCIONA, a leading global provider of sustainable infrastructure solutions, has been awarded two contracts totaling €6 million to enhance wastewater treatment capabilities in Portugal. The projects will focus on the tertiary treatment of water at the Vilamoura Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Algarve and the Carvalhal WWTP in Mafra, a town in the Lisbon District. Combined, the plants will have a treatment capacity of 1,356 m³/h.
Vilamoura WWTP: Enhancing Reclaimed Water Use
The Vilamoura WWTP project, in collaboration with local company Tecnorém and commissioned by Águas do Algarve, aims to produce high-quality reclaimed water for irrigation purposes. This tertiary treatment plant, using advanced ultrafiltration technology with a capacity of 1,000 m³/h, will primarily supply water for the irrigation of golf courses. The plant is expected to be fully operational by mid-2026.
Carvalhal WWTP: Environmental Protection in Mafra
The Carvalhal WWTP, awarded by Águas do Tejo Atlântico, will introduce wastewater treatment to the area for the first time. Utilizing activated sludge technology with a capacity of 356 m³/h, the plant will play a critical role in preventing pollution of the Lizandro River and protecting the nearby Foz do Lizandro beach, a popular tourist destination.
