ABB has introduced ChloroStar™, a cutting-edge family of sensors, transmitters, and accessories designed to enhance chlorine measurement and analysis. Targeted at water, wastewater, and industrial applications, the ChloroStar™ family enables precise chlorine control, boosting process uptime and improving treatment efficiency.
Addressing Historical Challenges in Chlorination
Chlorination is a critical process for removing harmful pathogens and ensuring the safety of potable and wastewater supplies, governed by strict regulatory standards. However, traditional chlorine measurement technologies have often been hindered by issues such as sensor fouling, drift, and high maintenance demands. The ChloroStar™ analyzers resolve these challenges with innovative self-cleaning sensors, predictive maintenance features, and advanced diagnostics, ensuring reliable and efficient chlorine dosing.
“Accurate and effective chlorination is key to safe and efficient treatment of potable and wastewater supplies, making maximum availability of measuring devices a critical requirement,” said Nikodem Siwek, Global Product Manager, Continuous Water Analysis, ABB Measurement & Analytics. “The new ChloroStar™ family enables users to count on maximum availability and reliability in their chlorine measurements whilst reducing maintenance.”
Key Components of the ChloroStar™ Family
The ChloroStar™ family includes two main components:
- ChloroStar™ Digital Sensor
This intelligent tri-electrode sensor measures free or total chlorine with enhanced accuracy, reduced drift, and integrated pH compensation. Its membrane-covered design minimizes cleaning needs, and the EZLink™ connection technology simplifies installation and operation. The sensor is compatible with ABB’s InFlow Multi-Cell system, ensuring stable measurements even with sample flow variations. With an industry-leading sample flow rate of 1 L/hr (0.26 gal/hr), the sensor is particularly suitable for drinking water applications. - ChloroStar™ Cell
Featuring a fast-reacting, direct-contact electrode, the ChloroStar™ Cell delivers reliable performance in high-fouling environments like municipal and industrial wastewater. Its innovative open-cell flow-through design uses sample flow for continuous self-cleaning, preventing clogging and blocking. The cell also reduces operational costs by cutting consumables expenses by 20% compared to traditional solutions.
Enhanced Capabilities with ABB Technologies
The ChloroStar™ sensors can be seamlessly integrated with ABB’s AWT420 dual-channel transmitter, which supports both analog and digital EZLink™ sensors. This versatile transmitter allows users to tailor their water analysis system with features like dynamic QR assistance, dual PID control, and auto pH correction.
For real-time mobile access, the EZLink™ Connect App uses Bluetooth to enable users to monitor chlorine sensor data, share audit information, and track maintenance activities directly from a smartphone or tablet. Additionally, ABB’s EZTest 100 chlorine photometer provides quick and accurate field measurements to verify process sample results using the industry-standard DPD method.
Industry Impact
With its modular design, self-cleaning technology, and focus on minimizing maintenance costs, the ChloroStar™ family represents a significant leap forward in chlorine measurement. By combining these sensors with other solutions in ABB’s continuous water quality portfolio, users can optimize their disinfection processes and ensure compliance with stringent water quality regulations.
This innovative family of devices underscores ABB's commitment to providing reliable and efficient solutions for water quality management.
