Flocean Secures $8.3 Million for Climate-Friendly Subsea Desalination Technology

December 2024

The world faces an escalating freshwater crisis, with the UN projecting a deficit of up to 40% by 2030. As traditional solutions struggle to meet growing demand, Flocean emerges as a transformative force with its patented subsea desalination technology.

Series A Funding Fuels Global Expansion

Flocean recently closed its Series A funding round, securing $8.3 million USD. The round was led by Burnt Island Ventures, Nysnø Climate Investments, and Freebird Partners, with additional contributions from investors in Norway and the U.S. specializing in energy and ocean industries.

"Flocean’s mission is to address global water scarcity through an ocean- and climate-friendly approach, and this mission aligns closely with the values and goals of its strategic investors. The capital raised will drive Flocean’s scaling efforts and support the deployment of commercial subsea desalination projects around the world,” said Alexander Fuglesang, CEO of Flocean.

The Problem with Traditional Desalination

Traditional seawater desalination plants, while addressing water shortages, are highly energy-intensive and contribute over 400 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually. They also produce brine, a byproduct harmful to marine biodiversity, and are vulnerable to environmental disruptions such as storms and geopolitical risks.

“Freshwater shortages are intensifying, and conventional desalination methods are part of the problem rather than the solution,” noted experts at Nysnø Climate Investments.

Flocean’s Subsea Technology: A Game Changer

Flocean’s subsea desalination solution offers a sustainable alternative. Installed at ocean depths of 400–600 meters, the technology cuts energy consumption by up to 50%, eliminates harmful brine discharge, and occupies 95% less land area than traditional plants. This subsea approach is also resilient against seasonal storms, algae blooms, and other environmental disruptions.

"The market for innovative solutions in subsea desalination is both substantial and critically important," said John Egil Johannessen, Investment Manager at Nysnø Climate Investments. "Flocean’s groundbreaking technology enables stable and climate-friendly freshwater production. It is great to see that expertise from Norway's oil and gas industry can be applied to address a global challenge with new Norwegian technology."

Leveraging Expertise for Sustainable Impact

Flocean’s technology builds on the expertise of its parent company, FSubsea, which has installed over 70 deep-water pumps. This foundation positions Flocean to deliver scalable and reliable freshwater solutions globally.

With this funding, Flocean plans to accelerate its global expansion and deploy its subsea desalination projects to combat freshwater scarcity worldwide. As climate change exacerbates water shortages, Flocean’s innovative approach offers hope for a more sustainable and secure future.
