Erma First, a renowned manufacturer of ballast water equipment, is expanding its product range with the addition of the world’s smallest ballast water treatment system (BWTS) through the acquisition of US-based firm oneTANK. This innovative system complies with both the IMO Revised G8 Code and United States Coast Guard regulations, offering a small-scale, cost-effective solution for ballast water treatment.
oneTANK’s system is designed to treat ballast water within the vessel's ballast tank using a combination of 8.25% or 12.5% sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and 30% sodium thiosulfate solution. With a footprint of just 600mm x 600mm, it is particularly suitable for installation in smaller vessels, such as workboats, tugboats, and semi-submersibles. It can also be used in larger vessels, specifically for treating ballast water in aftpeak tanks. The system has already been deployed aboard tankers from the Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) and the Dutch dredger Charlock.
Konstantinos Stampedakis, Managing Director of Erma First, described the technology as “game-changing,” emphasizing its compact size, simplicity, and full automation. He highlighted that it offers a quick-to-install solution for small ballast tanks on larger ships, as well as a stand-alone option for smaller vessels like yachts, tugs, and offshore support vessels.
Kevin Reynolds, Managing Director of oneTANK, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Erma First, noting the company’s successful track record in introducing large electro-chlorination systems to the global merchant fleet. He further added that Erma First’s commitment to research and development, along with its financial resources, would significantly enhance the international marketing of this product.
