Northumbrian Water (NWL) has bolstered its water quality monitoring capabilities by integrating Palintest’s Lumiso range of testing solutions. This move highlights NWL’s continued dedication to ensuring public health and operational efficiency, as it strives to provide safe, high-quality water to 2.7 million residents across an expansive 9,400 km² service area, spanning from Teesside to Berwick upon Tweed.
After a comprehensive consultation with Gateshead-based Palintest in 2023, NWL made a significant investment in 30 Lumiso Expert units, 41 Lumiso Chlorine devices, and 40 Turbidity Meters. These advanced tools have revolutionized NWL’s ability to meet stringent UK water quality standards, with early trials showing a remarkable 70% reduction in technical escalations—marking a major improvement in the utility’s treatment processes.
Michael James, Instrument Technician at NWL, shared the positive impact of the upgrade, saying: “The benchtop and portable instruments are key components to verify our treatment processes, so accuracy and reliability are crucial. Our operators and technicians have observed first-hand the precision, durability, and reliability that Palintest instruments bring to the table. These instruments are second to none in terms of their performance and have given us confidence in results to verify water quality.”
This adoption of the Lumiso range follows challenges NWL faced with older testing instruments, which often resulted in inefficiencies, unreliable data, and compliance risks. The newly implemented tools, designed for both accuracy and user-friendliness, now enable NWL to more effectively monitor key parameters such as aluminium, ammonia, chlorine, and turbidity with greater confidence.
