Southampton Wastewater Treatment Works Upgrade Enhances Water Quality

January 2024

Two significant wastewater treatment facilities in the Southampton region have recently implemented a cutting-edge treatment process aimed at enhancing water quality.

The Slowhill Copse Wastewater Treatment Works in Marchwood and the Millbrook Wastewater Treatment Works have both adopted state-of-the-art ultraviolet (UV) technology. This revolutionary approach ensures that wastewater undergoes treatment through a UV process designed to eliminate disease-causing organisms, resulting in significantly cleaner wastewater returning to the environment.

This initiative is part of a broader investment totaling £63 million, specifically dedicated to safeguarding shellfish in Southampton Water. The allocation includes £25 million for Millbrook, £18 million for Slowhill Copse, £13 million for Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works, and £8 million for Ashlett Creek Wastewater Treatment Works.

John Penicud, Southern Water’s Director of Wastewater Operations, expressed his satisfaction with the implementation of UV technology at both sites, emphasizing its positive impact on water quality in the area. This advancement aligns with the long-term goal of enhancing the health of Southampton Water and protecting shellfish.

Penicud stated, "We're always looking for new ways to leverage technology and innovation to improve the environment, reduce storm overflows, and create healthier rivers and seas."

The execution of these upgrades is being overseen by contractor GTb, a collaborative effort between Galliford Try Environment and Binnies UK Ltd. The UV process at Millbrook commenced in November, followed by Slowhill Copse in December.

Martin Hall, Framework Director at GTb, expressed delight at the successful implementation of the new equipment at Millbrook and Slowhill Copse. These projects mark significant milestones for GTb as the first two major initiatives brought into service for Southern Water, reflecting a commendable outcome for all parties involved.
